Poetry: "We'll Be OK"

Words of hope in troubled times.

I wrote this piece back in June 2024, when I was first starting to experiment with writing poetry. It was inspired by a piece of graffiti that I pass by every time I'm driving home from work. I held on to it for a long time because I didn't feel completely comfortable publishing it, but I wanted to post something positive for President's Day (a holiday which I otherwise have no interest in celebrating this year or possibly any other year). So here's a little poem about trying to remain optimistic amidst societal turbulence. I hope you enjoy it.

Driving through the urban maze
My head and heart in gloomy grays
Three words cut through depression haze
They say to me: WE’LL BE OK.

Light blue graffiti on a white brick wall
Not much to admire at all
But the jagged spray-painted letters stand tall
And say the words WE’LL BE OK.

Despite the news from overseas
And our home front anxieties
It’s a message to all societies
Don’t lose hope: WE’LL BE OK.

It’s a peace I wish I could achieve
A reality we all must weave
And so I’ll play at make-believe
And say out loud WE’LL BE OK.
